Detective Conan's Manga Index
Special Characters

These are non-"Black Organization" characters who do not appear in the series on a regular basis, and whose appearances may warrant a special mention.

Heiji Hattori
Shinichi's friendly rival. Heiji is a young aspiring detective from Osaka, and speaks with a Kansai accent. He's the son of Osaka's Chief of Police Heizou Hattori. And just like Shinichi, he also has a childhood female friend slash romantic interest. Her name is Kazuha Toyama.

Heiji first shows up in Tokyo to challenge his eastern counterpart, Shinichi, to a battle of detective skills. Instead, he meets Conan.

At first, Heiji would go head to head against Conan/Shinichi to see who can solve a case first. But he has since become good friends with Conan/Shinichi, so they now go solving cases together.

First appearance: vol.10 file.2 in the "Heiji vs. Shinichi" case. It's well worth checking out, since that is also the case when Shinichi first returns to his grown-up body.

Kaitou Kid - Kid The Phantom Thief
(Kaito Kuroba)
A fan favorite. He's the very elusive phantom thief who uses word puzzles to announce his targets. He is also the main character of a 3-volume long manga that Goushou Aoyama finished before he created Detective Conan.

The Kaitou Kid is a master of disguise, and can take on the voice and form of anyone. He's not an evil person, but he is on the wrong side of the law.

Just like Shinichi, the Kaitou Kid is actually a normal highschooler leading a double life. Named Kaito Kuroba, he's the son of a famous kaitou/magician, and steals to maintain his father's legend.

He's gone head to head against Conan and Shinichi multiple times. All the cases involving the Kaitou Kid are worth checking out.

First appearance: vol.16 file.6 in the "Black Star Pearl" case.

Occasionaly, he shows up in the series to play tricks on his son.

"Night Baron"
A fictional character, created by Shinichi's novelist father.

Even though he's not real, he is an enigmatic character that shows up several times in the series. He serves as a very effective mask, used by the villain to hide his/her true identity when commiting a crime.

Because of his freakish appearance, cases involving the "Night Baron" are particularly unnerving.

First appearance: vol.5 file.10 in the "Conan Kidnapped" case.

Kazuha Toyama
Heiji's childhood friend and love interest. Even though she and Heiji are not an official couple, Kazuha is extremely jealous of anyone who may steal Heiji away from her. She was very suspicious of Ran at first, but they've become good friends since then.

Heiji always wears the lucky charm Kazuha gave him. It has protected him and Conan on multiple occassions.

Kazuha is the daughter of Inspector Toyama of the Osaka police force.

First appearance: vol.19 file.5 in the "Osaka" case.

Sonoko's love interest. He's a karate champ with the nickname "the prince of kicks." He meets Sonoko and Ran during their vacation to Izu, and saves Sonoko from a deranged serial killer, thus ending Sonoko's lonely streak.

He's a stoic old-fashioned guy who uses few words. Most of the time when he talks, he's telling Sonoko to wear less revealing clothes.

Unfortunately for Sonoko's love life, Makoto is obsessed with finding worthy karate challengers, and went abroad to further train himself. They have since had to carry a long-distance relationship.
